Although routine dental visits will provide you with an attractive and healthy smile, they can also prevent overall health problems. If you do not practice good oral hygiene, then it can increase your risk of developing a wide range of chronic illnesses.

Research has show that a healthy mouth and healthy body go hand-in-hand. If you have a healthy mouth, then you have a better chance of good overall health. There has also been research that has suggested good oral health can prevent the development of certain diseases.

Periodontal Disease and Health Problems

The Academy of General Dentistry has stated there is a relationship between periodontal disease and other health problems. These health complications can include heart disease and stroke. Furthermore, pregnant women who have periodontal disease are at an increased risk of going into pre-term labor.

Furthermore, there has been research that has linked over 90% of individuals with systematic diseases, which are diseases that impact organs or the entire body, to also have oral problems such as mouth ulcers, inflamed gums, dry mouth, and other gum problems. These systematic diseases can include:

  • Oral cancer
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart disease
  • Leukemia
  • Diabetes
  • Pancreatic cancer

If you have routine dental examinations, a dentist may be able to detect a health problem when it is in the early stages.

Poor oral health can also lead to complications with the heart and other major organs in your body. Those who have mouth infections are at an increased risk for having an inflamed heart that is caused by bacterial endocarditis, which impacts individuals with heart disease or injured heart tissue.

The digestions cycle starts with the physical and chemical process in your mouth. Poor oral health can lead to digestive problems, which include irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal failure, and other digestive complications.

What You Can do to Maintain Good Oral Health

If you want to maintain good oral health, then it is crucial to practice good oral hygiene. This can include visiting a dentist and practicing good oral habits at home.

Visit a Dentist on a Regular Basis

If you see a dentist on a regular basis for cleanings and exams, it will help to keep your mouth healthy. When you have a dental exam, a dentist can notice poor nutrition, poor hygiene, problems with the alignment of the jaw, and other problems. Dental cleanings will also remove any tartar that is on your teeth and gum line. You should visit a dentist every six months for a cleaning.

Practice Good Hygiene at Home

You should also practice good oral hygiene in between dental visits. In order to keep your mouth healthy, brush your teeth twice per day for two minutes. You should also use a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Be sure to floss daily, which will remove any plaque that is stuck in between your teeth. Cigarettes and tobacco products should also be avoided. If you smoke or use tobacco products, then it can increase your risk of developing periodontal disease and oral cancer.
